An Akure Magistrate’s Court has ordered the remand of four men at the Olokuta Correctional Facility and one woman at the Ondo Correctional Centre over alleged involvement in attempted murder, arson, wilful destruction of property, and conduct likely to breach public peace.
The defendants, Uche Godwin (30), Hycient Chinedu (30), Samuel John (29), Joseph Chukwudi (29), and Otunoba Taye (35), were arraigned on a four-count charge filed by the police.
According to the prosecutor, Inspector Adebayo Suleiman, the incident occurred on March 16, 2026, around 9:00 a.m. in Ogbese, Akure, Ondo State. He alleged that the accused attempted to kill ASP Ilori Abiodun by attacking him with a cutlass, inflicting injuries, and also tried to set the Ogbese Divisional Headquarters on fire.
The prosecutor further stated that the defendants engaged in actions capable of breaching public peace by allocating a Government Reserved Area at Iloro Camp for the cultivation of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp.
He noted that the alleged offences violate Section 516 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.
Following a remand application supported by an affidavit, the court granted the request to remand the defendants pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Magistrate Damilola Sekoni adjourned the case until June 22, 2026, for further review.
