The Nigerian football community has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of former Super Eagles striker Michael Eneramo, who reportedly passed away on Friday, April 24, 2026.
According to reports, the 40-year-old collapsed while playing in a local football match in Kaduna State. The incident occurred at the Angwan Yelwa pitch in the Television area of Kaduna, where Eneramo had come on as a second-half substitute before suddenly slumping without any physical contact.
Eyewitnesses said efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, and he was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
The Nigeria Football Federation has expressed deep shock over the loss. Its General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, described the development as devastating, praying for strength for his family and the entire football community.
Eneramo was widely respected across African and European football, earning the nickname “Al Dababa” (The Tank) during his successful spell with Espérance Sportive de Tunis. He also featured for clubs such as Beşiktaş J.K., Sivasspor, and Lobi Stars F.C..
On the international stage, he earned 10 caps for Nigeria, including scoring a crucial goal against Tunisia during the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Before his passing, Eneramo had moved into coaching and was running a football academy.
The official Super Eagles social media account paid tribute to the late striker, posting his photo alongside the message: “Rest in peace Michael.”
