The Ondo State Agricultural Development Project (ADP) has raised concerns over a looming shortage of extension workers, urging the state government to take urgent steps to address workforce gaps in the agricultural sector.
The State Project Manager, Mrs. Justinah Arogundade, made the appeal during the distribution of 70 motorcycles to extension officers by LPRES in Akure.
She cautioned that a significant number of extension officers are approaching retirement, which could create a serious vacuum in service delivery if not addressed promptly.
“Within the next three years, the state may experience a critical shortage of extension agents. It is therefore important for the government to begin recruiting younger professionals to sustain growth in the sector,” she said.
Arogundade emphasized the vital role extension workers play in advancing agriculture, particularly in bridging the gap between research and rural farmers by disseminating modern farming techniques and innovations.
She warned that inadequate staffing could undermine productivity gains and hinder rural development.
The ADP boss also called for continuous investment in agriculture, especially in human capital development, to secure long-term food sustainability and economic growth.
Meanwhile, the State Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budgeting, Mr. Olaoluwa Akindolire, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Simon Ogunlade, commended the government for fostering a supportive environment for agricultural programmes.
He further praised the ministry’s leadership for effectively implementing initiatives aimed at boosting agricultural development across the state.
