Over nine million households reached nationwide \u2014 Minister<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Monday called for closer collaboration between the Federal Government and states in implementing social intervention programmes, stressing that effective delivery depends on strong coordination with structures closest to the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The governor made the call in Akure while receiving the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Bernard M. Doro, during a courtesy visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Aiyedatiwa said governance at the federal and sub-national levels must be complementary, commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the Household Prosperity and Cash Transfer Programme under the Renewed Hope Agenda, which he described as a key intervention targeting vulnerable Nigerians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He disclosed that the South-West has received about N62 billion under the scheme, with Ondo State accounting for 396,671 beneficiary households across the first, second and third tranches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to him, the scale of the programme makes full household verification impractical, hence the adoption of targeted engagement with selected beneficiaries across the 18 local government areas to assess impact and gather feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The governor also highlighted challenges surrounding National Identification Number (NIN) registration among some beneficiaries, directing relevant agencies to intensify efforts to reach those affected, particularly individuals listed on the social register, to ensure seamless payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He commended the minister\u2019s field-based assessment approach, noting that direct interaction with beneficiaries would boost transparency, accountability and overall service delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his remarks, Doro said the visit formed part of a nationwide review of the Household Prosperity and Empowerment Cash Transfer Programme under the Renewed Hope Agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He explained that the initiative has delivered N75,000 to the poorest households in three tranches across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, benefiting over nine million households nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The minister revealed that Ondo State alone has received about N9.9 billion through successive payment cycles covering the completed and ongoing tranches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, he expressed concern over low public awareness of the programme despite its wide reach, calling for improved communication and transparency in the implementation of social protection initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Doro added that randomly selected beneficiaries in Ondo would be engaged directly to confirm receipt of funds and provide feedback to guide future policy decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He noted that the Federal Government is already working on a redesigned social protection framework, emphasising the importance of grassroots engagement in ensuring that future interventions reflect the realities of beneficiaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Describing the ongoing exercise as a data validation process, the minister said it is aimed at strengthening accountability, improving targeting and enhancing the effectiveness of federal welfare programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
