The Chief Judge of Ondo State, Justice Olusegun Odusola, has ordered the release of 13 inmates awaiting trial at the Olokuta Medium Security Custodial Centre in Akure, as part of ongoing efforts to decongest correctional facilities and enhance the administration of justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision was taken during the Chief Judge\u2019s routine inspection of custodial centres across the state, aimed at reviewing cases of inmates\u2014particularly those held for extended periods without trial or under questionable circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing officials during the visit, Justice Odusola emphasised the judiciary\u2019s commitment to fairness, noting that justice should not be driven solely by convictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is part of my statutory responsibility to visit correctional centres. Many inmates in Nigeria have spent years awaiting trial. These visits enable us to assess such cases and, where appropriate, order their release or grant bail,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stressed that the exercise is not merely ceremonial but legally backed and designed to deliver real impact, adding that deserving inmates should be shown compassion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among those granted unconditional release were Sanni Bello, freed on health grounds due to a kidney-related illness, and 19-year-old Peter Adamu, who is battling anaemia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Others released include Rasheed Olayiwola; Peter Wisdom, 32; Goodluck Ofinie, 23; Moses Udo, 25; Abdullah Ibrahim, 30; Akanbi Damilare, 20; Kabiru Haruna, 19; Elela Monday, 45; Segun Akin, 23; Samuel Friday; and Rasheed Ayuba, 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a separate ruling, Ogunmola Akintomiwa was granted bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties, one of whom must be a resident of Ondo State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Justice Odusola also directed that three inmates with serious medical conditions be transferred for proper treatment. They include Akinwa Victor, diagnosed with schizophrenia and facing a charge of patricide, as well as Muhammad Suleiman and Gabriel Bamidele, both referred to the Ministry of Health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, the Controller of Corrections in Ondo State, Charles Oyewole, represented by the Officer-in-Charge of the facility, Adewale Ojo, highlighted the severe challenges confronting the custodial centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He disclosed that the facility, originally built to accommodate 160 inmates, currently holds 831, with about 80 per cent awaiting trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to him, many inmates are indigent and unable to meet bail conditions or afford legal representation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oyewole described the jail delivery exercise as a vital step towards reducing overcrowding and prolonged detention. He also called for increased government support in logistics, inmate welfare, and operational resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He further urged the state government to strengthen its partnership with the Nigerian Correctional Service by providing essential materials, transportation for inmates, and vocational tools to support rehabilitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exercise is part of broader efforts by the Ondo State judiciary to improve criminal justice administration and rebuild public trust in the system.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
