The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has reportedly chosen former Rivers State governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as his running mate for the 2027 general election.
Sources within the coalition said Atiku settled on Amaechi after weeks of consultations and negotiations among key stakeholders.
The move is seen as part of efforts to strengthen the ADC ticket and achieve regional and political balance ahead of the election.
Amaechi had previously dismissed speculation about a vice-presidential bid, insisting he would pursue the party’s presidential ticket and stating that no formal offer had been made to him after he submitted his nomination form.
However, sources close to the former governor disclosed that he later came under pressure from influential political figures across different regions, prompting renewed discussions with Atiku’s camp.
According to a close associate of Amaechi, assurances were given that the vice-presidential candidate would play a significant role in both the campaign and the administration if the ADC wins the election.
“Atiku assured that the VP nominee would have extensive roles to play in the campaigns and government,” the source said.
Meanwhile, in a statement marking Democracy Day on June 12, Atiku urged Nigerians to remain committed to democratic ideals.
He expressed concern over what he described as increasing political tension in the country, alleging that opposition groups were facing pressure through internal crises, defections and state actions.
The former vice president called on citizens to safeguard the gains of democracy and uphold the principles that emerged from the June 12 struggle.
