A former Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Jumoke Akindele, has announced her intention to contest the Ondo South Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, urging Lucky Aiyedatiwa and the All Progressives Congress to expand opportunities for women in politics.
Akindele, the first female Speaker of the state Assembly, disclosed her ambition while speaking with journalists in Akure on Tuesday. She revealed that she had consulted widely with the governor and other stakeholders across the district, noting that her bid has so far received no opposition.
“I stand before you with a deep sense of responsibility, clarity of purpose, and unwavering commitment to our collective future. After wide consultations and careful reflection, I, Rt. Hon. Jumoke Yetunde Akindele, am fully prepared to contest for the Ondo South Senatorial District,” she said.
She explained that her decision was driven by a desire to serve and provide purposeful leadership that aligns with the aspirations of the people.
Akindele identified key issues affecting the district, including economic challenges, youth unemployment, poor infrastructure, and the ocean incursion threatening Ayetoro community, stressing the need for strong representation at the national level.
“These are not just talking points; they are realities that require urgent and effective action,” she added.
Highlighting her experience, she noted, “I bring to this race my tenure as a former Speaker, a proven leadership record, and a commitment to inclusive governance. I have served, listened, and learned now I am ready to do more.”
She called on residents to support her candidacy, emphasizing that Ondo South needs bold, experienced, and people-focused representation.
The former Speaker also advocated increased female participation in politics, lamenting that no woman has represented the state in the Senate since its creation.
“Women are often confined to domestic roles, but we have moved beyond that. The greatest empowerment at this time is to give women the opportunity to represent their people and we will deliver,” she said.
